The Carnegie Museum is located in the old Carnegie Library in downtown Port Angeles, WA. The Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe took over management of the now Carnegie Museum and is utilizing the space to display cultural and historical artifacts related to the history of the Tribe and other tribes on the Olympic Peninsula. Exhibit highlights include:
- The ancient tribal village of č̕ixʷícən was uncovered by the Washington State Department of transportation in 2003 when they attempted to construct a graving dock to repair the ailing Hood Canal Bridge. The earliest confirmed settlement at the village site dates to 750 B.C, and was in use until the 1930’s when the local mills pushed the villagers out of the area. Over time the village was covered in 15-30 feet of backfill which preserved much of its historical significance. Artifacts discovered at the village site are only on display at the Elwha Klallam Heritage Center.
- The Elwha River Dam Removal project is the largest in US history. Come learn about why it was necessary, and the steps we are taking to foster ecological growth in the area in this family friendly and engaging exhibit.
