Qweng7qwengila7 (Guemes Island)
Qweng7qwengila7, now known as Guemes Island, was a traditional location for the Samish Tribe’s winter villages. It was commonly known as “Dog Island” because the Tribe often kept their Woolley Dogs on the island, to isolate them from hunting dogs and keep the breed pure. Today, visitors can take the Anacortes-Guemes Island Ferry to explore the island—which includes numerous parks and trails.
